Some associate with them dried out landscapes, dead plants and missing life. For me, however, the deserts of our earth are pure fascination. We will now tell you how much life is actually in them and what surprises they have in store for you.
The desert landscapes of our planet are a place of extremes. Not everyone may find their sight beautiful and impressive. However, deserts just impress me again and again. No place in the world can keep up with its superlatives: the largest, the driest, the hottest or even the saltiest. And yet, some plants and animals manage to find a home in these extreme conditions. It is probably this uniqueness and peculiarity that makes deserts into something beautiful in their own way. Here are the most beautiful deserts on earth.
The Most Beautiful Deserts on Earth
The Sahara in North Africa is the largest dry desert in the world with around nine million square kilometers. It ranges from the Atlantic in the west to the Red Sea in the east. The beautiful sand dunes make up only about a fifth of the entire Sahara – they also shape mountains, valleys, rivers and oases.
The seemingly never-ending dunes of the Namib Desert in the “Namib Naukluft National Park” in Namibia.
Namib means “great emptiness”. It is the oldest desert and has the greatest history in the world. It was created around 55 million years ago. The Deadvlei is one of the sights: dead acacia trees have stood on a clay pan for several hundred years.
The largest salt desert in the world is the “Salar de Uyuni” in Bolivia. The salt pan was formed more than 10,000 years ago when Lake Tauca dried up. The salt desert can do even more superlatives: when it rains a lot, it becomes the largest natural mirror in the world.
The white limestone formations in the Egyptian part of the Libyan Desert are amazing. A natural sculpture park has emerged. The color of the limestone also gives the desert its name: “White Desert”
The salt deserts in the Atacama Desert are a striking natural phenomenon. It is the best known and largest.
The Atacama Desert is considered the driest desert in the world. It extends from Tacna in southern Peru to Bolivia.
Antarctica is the largest and most extreme ice desert on earth. The continent of Antarctica is 13.2 million square kilometers.
The name “White Sands” is literally incorrect. Because the “white sand” is plaster. The desert is located in the south of the US state of New Mexico and is part of the Chihuahua desert in the border area between the USA and Mexico.
The Zin Desert is a stone desert in Israel. It is part of the Negev desert, which is around 12,000 square kilometers in size and extends from Beersheba in the north to Eilat in the south.
Discover the Beauty of the Deserts of this Earth
It’s impressive what nature has to offer, isn’t it? It does not always have to be green to deal with the sea or the mountains in order to shine in beauty. In my eyes, these ten deserts offer their own beauty and each score with its uniqueness. You shouldn’t put all of them on the bucket list, but one or the other is definitely worth a visit!
